The Black Panther came from Mozambique. Eusébio was scoring more than 40 goals a season when football was still watched in black and white.
He started at Sporting de Lourenço Marques and made his name at Benfica, where he scored 473 goals in 440 games. His career, from 1957 to 1979, finished in North America with Boston Minutemen and Toronto Metros. Along the way came:
- the European Cup with Benfica in 1962
- the Ballon d'Or in 1965, making him one of the first African-born players to win it
- the top scorer's prize at the 1966 World Cup, where he scored 9 goals for Portugal
Many still rank him among the best players the game has seen.
