Frédéric Kanouté was a tall, gentle striker who gave European defences plenty of trouble between 1997 and 2013. He passed through Lyon, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, but Sevilla is where the Mali forward made his name.
At Sevilla he scored 136 goals and won the UEFA Cup twice, in 2006 and 2007. The second of those years also brought him the African Footballer of the Year award. He played for Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations, and away from the pitch he put a good deal of time into charity and humanitarian work back home.
