Why is George Weah ranked first?
Because 30 years after he won the Ballon d'Or in 1995, no other African has won it. That alone settles most arguments. He was also FIFA World Player of the Year, and African Footballer of the Year three times.
Weah played from 1985 to 2003. The main stops were Monaco, PSG, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City and Marseille, and at Milan he won Serie A when Italian football was at its strongest.
Then there is the goal against Verona. He picked the ball up in his own box, dribbled the length of the pitch and scored, one of the best solo goals anyone has managed.
He came from one of the poorest countries in the world, and he showed that a player from there could be the best on the planet.
