Senegal met France, the defending champions, in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup and shocked them, with El Hadji Diouf leading the line.
The debutants went on to reach the quarter-finals, one of the best World Cup runs by an African side, and Diouf was central to it. He was African Footballer of the Year in 2001 and again in 2002, and he also took the best player award at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations.
His club career, from 1998 to 2015, took in Sochaux and Lens, then Liverpool, Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Blackburn and Leeds, playing up front or out wide.
