Football Villains #18: Duncan Ferguson

Duncan Ferguson is the ONLY professional footballer in British history to serve time in prison for an on-pitch incident. Big Dunc headbutted Raith Rovers' Jock McStay in 1994 and was sentenced to 44 days in Barlinnie Prison. The man was so terrifying that burglars broke into his house and HE beat THEM up. Twice!

Country: Scotland Position: Striker Career: 1990-2006 Clubs: Dundee United, Rangers, Everton, Newcastle United

The Rap Sheet

  • Served 44 days in Barlinnie Prison for headbutting Jock McStay during a match in 1994
  • Is the only British professional footballer to be jailed for an on-field assault
  • Headbutted opponents so often that it became his trademark — received multiple long bans
  • Caught burglars breaking into his house and physically detained them until police arrived — TWICE
  • Was sent off 8 times in his career and feared by every defender in England

The Verdict

Big Dunc was so hard that even criminals were scared of him. Everton fans LOVED him because he gave everything on the pitch — including headbutts. He's the only player on this list who went to actual prison for what he did on a football field!

Tomorrow: #17 — Stay tuned for the next villain!
