Football Villains #25: Jens Lehmann

The man was CRAZY. Not just a little bit crazy — completely, absolutely, wonderfully insane. Jens Lehmann was a brilliant goalkeeper who did the most bizarre things any footballer has ever done. He urinated behind the advertising boards DURING a match. He threw objects. He fought with everyone. Arsenal's Mad German was something else!

Country: Germany Position: Goalkeeper Career: 1989-2010 Clubs: Schalke 04, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, VfB Stuttgart

The Rap Sheet

  • Urinated behind the advertising boards during a Champions League match vs Unirea Urziceni
  • Was sent off in the 2006 Champions League Final — the biggest red card in CL history
  • Got into fistfights with his own teammate Oliver Kahn over the Germany #1 spot
  • Threw a bottle at a Dortmund fan and received a fine for unsportsmanlike conduct
  • Came out of retirement at age 41 to play one match for Arsenal and immediately argued with everyone

The Verdict

Lehmann was part of the legendary Arsenal Invincibles and was a top-class goalkeeper. But his brain was wired differently. You never knew what he was going to do next — save a penalty, fight a fan, or take a toilet break behind the goal. Absolute chaos!

Tomorrow: #24 — Stay tuned for the next villain!
