The 2026 Uganda Open golf tournament will take place from 25th-29th August at the Uganda Golf Club. This year’s edition is a unique one with Ugx 15 million prize money to be won by the top 15 players. Ronald Kidega a prominent golfer in the 90’s surprised the field that included golf great Deo Akope and Stephen Birungi on the day. Kidega took an early lead exciting the golf fraternity but finished runner-up behind Birungi who won his second Open back-to-back. This year’s edition has a huge exciting field comprising golfers from Zambia Kenya Tanzania Rwanda Burundi and Uganda. Ronald Reagan Akena from Lugazi Hills Golf and Country doesn’t want to repeat his 2023 disappointment where he lost as Day One leader. Akena recalls 'It was course freight on the day and lack of experience on my part. I really don’t want to remember that in my career.' Akena is among several local favourees for this year’s open. Others include Joseph Cwinyaai Juma Abiti Abdullah Kakooza Joseph Kasozi Abdul Kaketto John Musimenta Amon Bwambale Godfrey Kambale and Lawrence Walakira. Martin Ochaya recalls his Day 1 lead in 2014 which he lost due to a stray ball injury. Ochaya said 'I shot 73 on opening round but a flying ball on Hole 12 limited me.' Dominic Musonda another Day One leader from Zambia led last year’s Open for three days before Joseph Cwinyaai won. Sadi Onito holds the record with 12 wins as no amateur has broken that mark. The big question remains will this year see another Day One leader fail? The 72-hole tournament is an OWGR event aiding global rankings. The prize fund for Amateurs is Ugx 15 million with winner taking Ugx 3 million and ranking points.
