KCB Kobs kept their 2026 Nile Special Rugby Sevens championship hopes alive with victory at the Kyabazinga Sevens in Bugembe on Sunday September 13.
The win lifted the Kobs to 82 points on the circuit standings, eight behind leaders Heathens and four adrift of Pirates with one tournament remaining.
Kobs must win the Kabaka Coronation Sevens at Wankulukuku this weekend to reach 104 points and clinch the title.
For that to happen, Heathens must fail to progress beyond the quarter-finals, limiting them to a maximum of 103 points.
Pirates must also miss the final, which would cap their total at 103 points and hand Kobs the crown on countback.
Josiah Ssempeke impressed with his quick distribution in Bugembe and said the squad wants to test how far they can push the title fight.
Byron Oketayot described the victory as a relief after a winless streak stretching back to the Mbarara Sevens in 2024.
Oketayot added that winning defines the Kobs identity and the current mindset of fight and grind could deliver a fourth Sevens championship since 2019.
The argument doing the rounds in Kampala is whether Kobs can produce the perfect storm at Wankulukuku or if the pressure of needing favours from other results will prove too much.
