Kitara FC suffered another continental setback after losing 4-0 to Egyptian giants Al Ahly in Cairo on Sunday, exiting the Caf Confederation Cup 6-1 on aggregate. The heavy defeat at the hands of Hussein El Shahat, who scored twice, alongside Mohamed Magdy Afsha and Taher Mohamed, left Uganda without a representative in the 2026/27 inter-club group stages. Over the past nine years, KCCA FC, Proline FC, Vipers SC, Express FC, Kitara FC, SC Villa and URA FC have struggled to secure consistent group-stage representation. KCCA reached the Caf Champions League group stages in 2018, followed by Vipers in 2022/23. Financial constraints remain a major obstacle for Ugandan clubs relying heavily on limited sponsorship and gate collections. Unlike Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns and Young Africans, Ugandan outfits cannot match recruitment, travel and squad depth spending. Difficult draws, limited continental experience and player turnover further undermine competitiveness. Weaknesses in youth development, administration and long-term investment compound the problem. The contrast is stark in the PAMOJA era. Tanzania has four clubs in the group stages while Uganda and Kenya have none. Kitara and Vipers are expected to receive $100,000 each from Caf.
