Zimbabwe edged Morocco 19-12 before a 40-17 win over Ghana put them alongside the hosts on two victories.
Zambia claimed tight wins over Tunisia 10-7 and Senegal 17-14 to join the leading group.
Nigeria opened with a 28-5 win over Ghana but fell 36-5 to Morocco in their second match.
Morocco recovered from their first-round loss to Zimbabwe with the heavy win over Nigeria.
The competition continues on Sunday with qualification places on the line.
