Uganda’s Lady Cranes return to the Rugby Africa Women’s 7s with two clear goals: win the continental showpiece and qualify for HSBC Division III in Dubai. South Africa has long dominated the tournament, with only Tunisia and Kenya claiming titles before. Uganda has reached the final four times, losing in 2006, 2007, 2008, and most recently to Kenya Lionesses in 2018.
Qualifying for HSBC Division III requires Uganda to finish as the highest-ranked side outside South Africa and Kenya, who are already in Division II. Tunisia and Madagascar are also chasing the same qualification spot. Winning the tournament outright remains the top priority, but qualification is the more attainable target.
Kenya Lionesses have proven a formidable barrier. Uganda lost 27-00 in 2023, 19-00 in 2024, and 17-10 in the most recent edition, with a converted try scored after the full-time hooter. Despite consistently closing the gap, Uganda has lost to Kenya in three consecutive semifinals since 2023. The 2025 and 2026 Safari 7s also ended in defeats to Kenya.
The Lady Cranes face a surmountable but steep challenge. Success would propel Uganda back into the international Rugby Sevens scene and mark a significant step forward for the sport locally.
