South Africa produced a spectacular final-round comeback at the Citrus Golf Club Les Oliviers in Hammamet, Tunisia, to secure their 13th All Africa Team Championship title on Saturday. Trailing Morocco by eight shots after the third round, the Proteas carded a team-leading 66 from debutants Jono Wilsenach and Judd Sundelson to overhaul the deficit and finish with a total of 624. Morocco settled for second place with 628, while Zambia claimed third on 646.
Uganda finished eighth overall with a team total of 671, trailing Kenya (667) and Zimbabwe (669) in the standings. The individual honours went to Adrian Andrade of Seychelles, who won the 54-hole event at 11-under 205, three strokes clear of his nearest rival.
On the sidelines of the championship, Uganda’s Johnson Omollo was re-elected unopposed as President of the Africa Golf Confederation (AGC), securing endorsement from 18 member countries present at the assembly and backed by 31 nations in total. The election was also validated by The R&A, the world governing body of golf.
GolfRSA celebrated the team’s resilience on social media, posting: “Eight shots back. Never out of the fight. Team South Africa saved their best for last… Protea pride. What a team.”
The victory marks South Africa’s third title in four editions and extends their dominance in the continental team event, while Uganda will look to improve on their eighth-place finish in the next edition.
