Marcel Andrew Otim clocked 3:24.00 to win his men's solo beach sprint time trial at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal on Saturday.
The 17-year-old finished ahead of Great Britain's Louie Walker at Saly Beach West despite strong currents and choppy Atlantic waters.
Otim described the experience as fun and said the opening run helped him learn the course ahead of Sunday's second time trial.
Rowing coach Batenga Nassozi praised the performance under difficult conditions and confirmed technical adjustments for the next round.
Uganda's table tennis mixed doubles pair of Joseph Sebatindira and Jemimah Nakawala lost 3-0 to Tunisia's Youssef Aidli and Ela Saidi at the Dakar Expo Center.
The Ugandans led by two points in each game and pushed the second to 13-11 before Tunisia's serving proved decisive with 19 points on their own delivery.
Swimming and rugby begin their campaigns on Sunday, November 1, adding to Uganda's programme at the Games.
Otim returns for Time Trial 2 on Sunday seeking to build on his opening result and advance to the knockout stages.
