Wairaka Hurricanes were crowned champions of the Jinja Independence Sixes Cup 2026 after winning all four of their matches to finish the tournament unbeaten with eight points. The tournament was played at Jinja SS Cricket Oval as part of celebrations marking 64 years since Uganda gained independence. Five teams competed in a double round-robin format, with the top side taking the title. The Hurricanes dominated the competition, recording four victories to claim the crown. They opened their campaign with an eight-wicket victory over Bugembe Warriors before defeating Wakitaka Gladiators by nine wickets in their second game. The Hurricanes maintained their winning run with another nine-wicket victory over Kakira Barbarians before wrapping up their campaign with a 31-run win against Budondo Pirates. Sadam Oyaga said the competition was part of development programmes aimed at growing cricket in the region. “By holding such tournaments, we give our young players an opportunity to grow in the game, apply themselves on the field and develop their game awareness for the benefit of the entire region,” he said. He also thanked the sponsors and organisers for supporting the tournament, including Mr Keswala, who sponsored the trophy, and Mr Gopal Dhudarejiaya, who sponsored lunch for the participants. The tournament was organised by Jinja Association of Cricket Clubs (JACC) in partnership with Cricket Uganda as part of their continued efforts to develop the game and provide young players with more opportunities to compete.
