Uganda will send a 100-strong cycling contingent to Nairobi this Sunday for the fifth edition of the Jubilee Live Free Bike Race at Uhuru Gardens. The team departed Kampala after receiving Shs33 million in support from Jubilee Insurance Uganda at a flag-off ceremony held at Sanyuka Restaurant in Bulange, Mengo on Friday.
Tour De Uganda director Lance Ismael Ssebayiga said the squad is buoyant after winning all four previous editions. Riders to watch include Lawrence Lorot, Shafic Mugulu, Paul Miiro, Davis Biyinzika and Hatim Kagaba alongside 2019 inaugural winner Jordan Schleck Ssekanwagi, who reclaimed gold last year by narrowly beating Olympian Charles Kagimu.
Uganda swept the Black Mamba category in 2025 with Willy Kato, Dominik Mugonda and Azziz Ssempijja taking gold, silver and bronze respectively while Maria Aleper earned women's silver and Augustine Ssebulime claimed para-category silver.
Jubilee Insurance senior marketing manager Camilla Mindru challenged the team not to rest on past glory, urging them to target top spots in all six race categories including the main race, team race, Black Mamba, family fun ride, kiddies and para-cyclist events carrying a total prize purse exceeding Shs100 million.
Ssebayiga hailed the insurer's consistent backing, saying the annual race keeps Ugandan riders sharp against the region's best. The Cranes contingent will look to extend their unbeaten run when the peloton rolls out on Sunday morning.
