Uganda Cranes welfare takes centre stage after Government of Uganda funding for 2027 AFCON Pamoja was announced at FUFA Stadium Kadiba on Monday.
FUFA president Moses Magogo said government would fund immediate welfare and logistical upgrades as Uganda prepares to co-host the tournament with Kenya and Tanzania.
Government has also agreed to clear qualification rewards for players who helped the Cranes reach the 2025 AFCON, paying each Shs40 million on a pro-rata basis.
The infrastructure plan includes international-standard stadiums at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, Hoima and Akii-Bua, plus training facilities in the northern, western and Namboole clusters.
The argument now doing the rounds is whether the promised welfare and infrastructure can deliver tangible gains for the Cranes rather than another round of pledges.
The stronger case is that paying the qualification bonus first builds trust, while leaving upgrades at three stadiums and scattered training sites would still fall short.
FUFA is also lobbying for Uganda Premier League-standard facilities in Mbarara, Fort Portal, Jinja, Mbale and West Nile, extending the project beyond the 2027 hosts' main clusters.
What did government commit to?
Government committed to immediate welfare and logistical upgrades, payment of Shs40 million pro-rata qualification bonuses, and three international-standard stadiums at Namboole, Hoima and Akii-Bua.
The proposed training-facility clusters are northern Uganda, Hoima and Namboole, while FUFA is lobbying for upgrades in Mbarara, Fort Portal, Jinja, Mbale and West Nile.
