Uganda Christian University (UCU) produced a strong performance to beat Busitema University 3-0 in the Pepsi University Football League at Mukono on Wednesday.
The Cardinals took control early, scoring twice in the opening 17 minutes to put the visitors under pressure.
Owor Chrysostom opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he headed home Ivan Kisemabo’s delivery to give UCU the lead.
Three minutes later, Bashir Wadawa doubled the advantage after taking advantage of a defensive mistake. A weak back pass from Busitema defender Jeremiah allowed Wadawa to intercept the ball and fire into the net.
UCU continued to create chances as they looked to extend their lead. Abiti Harry came close in the 33rd minute after receiving a pass from Owor, but his effort went narrowly wide.
Captain Abiti had another opportunity in the 38th minute after Jordan Ariaka dribbled past two defenders and picked him out with a cutback. However, he sent his powerful effort over the crossbar.
Busitema, who struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, showed some improvement after the break and enjoyed spells of possession as they searched for a way back into the match.
Derrick Ntale and Owino tried to create opportunities for the visitors, but UCU remained organised at the back and dealt with their attacks.
The hosts eventually sealed the victory in the 70th minute after being awarded a penalty. Alvin Eipu Kitiibwa stepped up and converted from the spot to make it 3-0.
The result gave UCU a comfortable victory, with their early goals setting the tone before Kitiibwa completed the scoring from the penalty spot.
Elsewhere in the competition, Metropolitan University will face Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) on Thursday at 3pm in Kampala.
