Tanzania Kenya and Uganda are developing a joint visa arrangement to ease cross-border travel for football fans during AFCON 2027 according to East African Community Council of Ministers chairperson Rebecca Kadaga.
Kadaga who also serves as Uganda's first deputy prime minister made the announcement during an inspection of Arusha Pamoja AFCON Stadium by East African Legislative Assembly members on Tuesday.
The special visa framework would allow supporters to attend matches in different host countries while visiting tourist attractions creating business opportunities for hotels tour operators and transport providers.
EALA member Abdullah Makame said the impact will depend on final visa rules and effective implementation at border crossings.
Construction of the 32500 capacity Arusha Pamoja Stadium has reached 95 percent completion officials told the delegation.
The 36th edition of AFCON will be co-hosted by Kenya Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17 2027 marking the first time the tournament is staged across three nations.
The argument doing the rounds in Kampala is whether border agencies can truly harmonise systems in time or if fans will still face the usual bottlenecks at Namanga Busia and Mutukula.
How will the AFCON 2027 joint visa work
The proposed framework aims to let fans move freely between Kenya Tanzania and Uganda during the tournament using a single visa instead of three separate entry permits.
