SC Villa beat Express 2-0 at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku on Wednesday to claim the Kampala derby bragging rights and move to third on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table.
Patrick Kakande opened the scoring after just four minutes when he bundled home Ibrahim Kasinde's cross from the right flank.
The playmaker continued to torment the Express defence with his pace and movement before Reagan Mpande nearly doubled the lead with a long-range effort that cleared the crossbar.
Arnold Odong and Andrew Okumu both missed headed chances from set pieces as Villa went into the break with a slender advantage.
Express improved after the interval and Isaac Wagoina headed Shafik Batambuze's cross wide from inside the six-yard box for their clearest opportunity.
Villa defended their lead and looked to strike on the break with Kakande almost turning provider again before substitute Andrew Otim sealed victory in added time.
Otim showed persistence to nick a high ball away from goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya and finish into an unguarded net sparking celebrations among the blue army.
The victory took the Jogoos to seven points from three matches while the Red Eagles dropped to ninth on three points after their impressive win over KCCA last week.
The argument doing the rounds in Kampala is whether Kakande's early form makes him the star boy Villa have missed since the departure of their previous creative talisman.
