Uganda Olympic Committee president Dr Donald Rukare challenged Team Uganda to uphold discipline and integrity at the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games during a flag-off ceremony at Copper Chimney on Monday.
The IV Summer Youth Olympic Games run from October 31 to November 13 in Dakar, marking the first edition held on African soil.
Rukare reminded athletes that wearing the national flag means representing more than 50 million Ugandans, not just personal ambition.
He described the contingent as pioneers tasked with showcasing Uganda's sporting potential and Africa's growing international presence.
The UOC president thanked the Government of Uganda, the Ministry of Sports, the International Olympic Committee and team partners for supporting youth sport preparations.
Rukare emphasised strict conduct standards from departure through the Games, urging athletes to respect coaches and avoid any behaviour that could bring the country into disrepute.
He warned that safeguarding violations and misconduct would attract sanctions during the competition in Senegal.
Anti-doping compliance was highlighted as critical, with athletes instructed to disclose all medication to team medical staff, including ordinary substances like aspirin.
Athletes were also urged to be open about injuries rather than concealing them from the medical team.
Key reminders from Rukare
- Discipline and respect for coaches mandatory
- Safeguarding violations attract sanctions
- All medication must be declared to medical team
- Injuries must be reported, not concealed
- Athletes represent 50 million Ugandans
- Games historic as first Youth Olympics in Africa
