Uganda’s Claire Najjuuko and Purity Nalua Nekesa are targeting a place in the final of the 2026 CAVB Zone V Beach Volleyball Championship after reaching the semifinals at Bunjako Beach.
The pair beat Kenya’s Eddah and Chesol 23-21, 21-13 in Saturday’s quarterfinal to set up a semifinal clash with Kenya’s Selina and Sembel on Sunday at 9:00am.
Najjuuko said the victory had boosted their confidence as they prepare for another difficult match against the Kenyans.
“We are happy to reach the semifinals, but our work is not done. We must stay focused, communicate well and fight for every point against Kenya,” she said.
She added that playing at home gives them extra motivation to push for a place in the final. “We want to make Ugandans proud. We know it will not be easy, but we shall give our best, correct our mistakes and remain united as a team,” she said.
Uganda’s other women’s pair, Margaret Namyalo and Eunice Amuron, exited after losing 21-13, 21-15 to Selina and Sembel.
Burundi’s Irakoze and Ndayikengurukiye advanced after beating Kenya’s Lorine and Wavinya 13-21, 21-18, 15-12, while South Sudan’s Agor Madut and Diing edged Burundi’s Buntubwimana and Kaze 21-17, 12-21, 15-13.
The women’s semifinals will see Burundi face South Sudan before Uganda take on Kenya, with the winners advancing to the final.
In the men’s competition, Uganda’s Luc Florent Kimararungu and Aziizi Busingye bowed out in the quarterfinals after losing 21-12, 22-20 to Kenya’s Chimanyi and Muliro.
Burundi dominated the men’s semifinals on Saturday, with Mukunzi and Iteriteka beating Chimanyi and Muliro 30-28, 21-15, while Gakiza and Manariyo defeated Kenya’s Amutallah and Oseko 21-11, 21-12.
The results set up an all-Burundi men’s final between Mukunzi and Iteriteka and Gakiza and Manariyo on Sunday. Kenya’s two pairs will contest the bronze medal.
The Entebbe Tour runs from October 21 to 26 at Bunjako Beach. Uganda are seeking to improve on last year’s performance in Burundi, where the women won bronze and the men reached the quarterfinals.
