Moses Matovu died last week aged 76 and was buried at Kyanja on Friday September 25.

The former Express FC winger and long-serving SC Villa official avoided controversy and acted as peacemaker whenever tempers flared.

Matovu played for Express in the late 1960s under coach Joseph Kiwanuka alongside national team stars like Ali Kitonsa and Charles Settuba.

He also featured for Police FC, Young Salumbey, Lint Marketing Board, Nakivubo Boys and Kibuli United.

Born June 19 1949 in Kawempe, he attended Mengo PS, Kibuli Demonstration, Kibuli Junior and Pillai SS before joining Kibuli United.

Express supremo Jolly Joe Kiwanuka spotted him at Nakivubo Boys and drafted the winger into a star-studded first team.

Matovu later served among the officials who helped the Jogoos become a dominant force in Ugandan football.

The argument doing the rounds in Kampala is whether Villa's current leadership honours the quiet builders like Matovu as loudly as the goal scorers.

Moses Matovu playing career

  • Kibuli United (non-league)
  • Nakivubo Boys (Express feeder side)
  • Express FC (1968 onwards)
  • Buganda regional team (1969 Madhvani Cup)
  • Police FC
  • Young Salumbey (second tier)
  • Lint Marketing Board (second tier)
