Mbarara City FC announces rebrand to Ankole FC ahead of Uganda Premier League 2026/27 season. Club aims to build regional support across Ankole sub-region rather than focusing on Mbarara City alone, says chairman Hon. Mwine Mpaka. This marks a shift from their 2016 identity tied to Mbarara, aligning with broader geographical representation.
The rebrand follows years of consistent presence in top-flight football. Mbarara City has spent eight seasons in Uganda Premier League over past decade. Chairman Mpaka explains the change: "Mbarara City had Ankole Lions in logo but we wanted wider appeal. Rebranding to Ankole FC ensures the club represents the entire sub-region."
Re-branding happens as club prepares for 10th anniversary on August 25, 2026. This milestone highlights their decade-long commitment to Ugandan top-flight football. Current home issues drive urgency — Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara is deemed unsuitable due to deterioration from non-football events.
Club now proposes Africa Coffee Park in Ntungamo as alternative venue. The site has artificial turf and requires FUFA approval. Last season, Mbarara City played home games at Rwamwanja Stadium in Kamwenge due to Kakyeka’s unfit status.
The Anokole FC rebrand is part of strategic planning for 2026/27 season. Chairman Mpaka notes: "We want supporters from all Ankole districts to embrace the club. This identity change reflects our regional roots, not just Mbarara City."
Debate centers on whether Ankole FC will dilute Mbarara’s football identity. Despite this, Mpaka insists: "This is about growth. The club needs unity across regions to succeed."
FUFA will finalize venue approval for Africa Coffee Park. If accepted, Mbarara City will move home games there — a first for a western Ugandan club in top-flight history.
