Mbarara City’s quest for the 2026/27 StarTimes Uganda Premier League title is dominating Ugandan sport today. New players and Shs10m in fresh sponsorship fuel their ambition, but history shows achieving this remains a massive leap.
Their eight-year top-flight journey has been a rollercoaster. From a debut 11th-place finish in 2017/18 to a high of fifth in 2018/19, their progression has stalled. Last season’s 12th-place drop cements their need for drastic change.
The Ankole Lions have signed familiar faces like Brian Aheebwa, who returns after an Ethiopian stint, and new arrivals from rivals KCCA and Kitara. These moves aim to inject experience and talent, but Mbarara’s past suggests even small steps are hard-won.
This isn’t just a new season for Mbarara; it’s a structural overhaul. Clubs like Vipers dominated with 67 points last year—Mbarara managed 26. Bridging that gap requires more than ambition, according to their recent struggles.
The argument doing the rounds in Ankole is whether financial backing can override ingrained inconsistencies. While optimism exists, Mbarara’s track record of ‘almosts’ raises doubts about immediate title chances.
If Mbarara succeeds, it will rewrite their story. Failure could push them back into Uganda’s footrace against traditional powerhouses. The 2026/27 season could define their legacy.
*Key signings: Brian Aheebwa (returns), Rogers Mugisha (KCCA), Ivan Bogere (UPDF). *Last season’s table: Vipers (67pts), Mbarara (26pts). *Mbarara’s best: 46pts in 2018/19 under Mbabazi.
