Premier League squad rules are forcing the hand of the United board. Unless they sell players quickly, the club is running out of space in that precious 25-man squad list.
The struggle with Man Utd transfers
The math is simple but painful. The Premier League allows a 25-player squad, but it is strictly split. You can only have 17 non-homegrown players. The rest—eight slots—must be homegrown.
This isn't just about players trained in Manchester. English and Welsh-trained players, like Darlow, count toward that homegrown quota. But for those big-money imports, the window is closing fast.
United has already used up precious slots. With the likes of Patrick Dorgu now taking up a non-homegrown slot, the room for error is zero. Wamma! If they want to add more firepower to the squad, they must dump some deadwood first.
How do Premier League squad rules affect United?
It is all about the age threshold. Players born on or after January 1, 2005, are exempt. They don't count toward the 17 non-homegrown or the 8 homegrown limits. This is a massive advantage for youngsters.
However, the clock is ticking for the rest. Players born in 2004 will no longer benefit from the Under-21 exemption for the 2026/27 season.
Dan Gore and Toby Collyer are currently occupying those vital homegrown berths. Even with Gore playing well—like his recent performance against Wrexham—he could still be moved on if the club needs to balance the books or the squad numbers.
How many more signings can Man Utd make?
Based on current squad constraints, Manchester United only have room for two more specific signings under the current Premier League restrictions unless they clear more space by selling players.
