Kenya beat Cricket Cranes by eight wickets at Gahanga Cricket Stadium Oval B in Kigali at the weekend to end Uganda's unbeaten start in the ILT20 Continent Cup.
Uganda had won their opening three matches against Sierra Leone, Botswana and hosts Rwanda before the Migingo Derby showdown.
Asked to bat first on a difficult surface, the Cricket Cranes posted 189 for six in their 20 overs.
Gerald Olipa top-scored with 53 while captain Riazat Ali Shah contributed 45 and Charles Musemeza added 30.
Kenneth Waiswa provided late fireworks with 37 from 20 balls to lift Uganda to a competitive total.
Kenya captain Dhiren Gondaria won the toss and elected to field, a decision that paid immediate dividends.
The Kenyan bowlers restricted Uganda's fluency with Sachin Gill claiming three for 26 and Lucas Oluoch Ndandason taking two for 47.
Kenya's chase became one-way traffic as Gondaria smashed 94 from 47 balls and former skipper Rakep Patel finished unbeaten on 56 from 35.
The duo shared a 119-run partnership featuring 13 fours and 12 sixes to reach 193 for two in just 16.4 overs.
Uganda missed several half-chances and a stumping opportunity that could have altered the chase's complexion.
Assistant coach Jackson Ogwang admitted the bowling unit failed to execute plans but insisted the team must keep their heads up.
"We have to keep our heads up. We still have another round to play," Ogwang said.
The defeat leaves Kenya top of the standings with Uganda second after four matches as the tournament enters its second round.
Uganda had last lost to Kenya in 2023 before this Migingo Derby reverse.
The argument doing the rounds in Kampala is whether the youthful batting line-up can recover from this reality check or if the bowling attack needs senior reinforcement before the next round.
