Rivaldo's left foot did things other players' feet do not attempt. The Brazilian was an attacking midfielder who scored hat-tricks, overhead kicks and 40-yard shots, and in the late 1990s he was Barcelona's most exciting player by some distance.
In 1999 he won the Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year, a double that confirmed what Barcelona supporters already knew.
The overhead kick against Valencia
The game most people remember came in 2001. Barcelona played Valencia with Champions League qualification at stake, and Rivaldo scored a hat-trick that included an overhead kick to secure the place. It is regularly listed among the best hat-tricks and best goals in history.
A year later he won the 2002 World Cup with Brazil, alongside Ronaldo and Ronaldinho in a golden generation.
Over his career he scored more than 300 goals from attacking midfield, an unusual total for a player who was not an out-and-out striker. His left foot is still named among the most gifted in the history of the game.
Plenty of players have a strong foot. Rivaldo's was closer to a weapon, and goalkeepers of the time treated it as one.
Tomorrow: number 13.
