Gambia head coach Jonathan McKinstry says Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan's missed penalty at the 2010 World Cup sparked his love for African football.

McKinstry made the revelation after his side beat the Black Stars 4-2 at Accra Sports Stadium in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Northern Irish tactician recalled watching Gyan miss the crucial spot-kick against Uruguay in the quarter-final in South Africa.

That miss denied Ghana a historic semi-final place and Uruguay progressed after winning the shootout.

Sixteen years later McKinstry returned to Accra as an opposing coach and masterminded a convincing victory.

The result handed Gambia a significant boost in their qualifying campaign while Ghana were left to reflect on a difficult night.

For McKinstry the occasion carried added personal significance given Ghana's role in his African football journey.

The Gambia outfit now turn their attention to the next qualifying fixtures as they ply their trade towards AFCON 2027.
