FUFA confirmed Asefa Firew Hailegebreal as the new head coach for the Uganda Women's National Teams on Friday at their Mengo headquarters. The Ethiopian tactician takes charge of the Crested Cranes, Queen Cranes and Teen Cranes on a two-year contract running until 2029. He replaces Sheryl Botes Ulanda whose contract was not renewed by the federation. Hailegebreal arrives with local pedigree after guiding Kampala Queens, now KCCA Women, to both the FUFA Women Super League and FUFA Women's Cup titles over the last two seasons. The appointment comes days before Uganda hosts Zambia in the Olympic Qualifiers first leg at Hamz Stadium on 8th October. The return leg follows the next weekend in Lusaka. The argument doing the rounds in Kampala is whether Hailegebreal's domestic success translates to a quick turnaround against a Zambia side that has regularly troubled the Crested Cranes. FUFA President Moses Magogo said the federation backed experience and continuity in picking a coach already familiar with the Ugandan game. The new coach will hold his first training session this week ahead of the high-stakes double-header. Uganda must overturn recent history against the Copper Queens to keep their Olympic dream alive.
