Cameroon claimed their maiden Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title with a 3-0 victory over Malawi in Rabat. The win ended a 22-year drought for the Indomitable Lionesses.
Marie Ngah Manga opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a header, while Naomi Eto volleyed home a stunning goal 10 minutes later. The third goal came in added time as Eto outsmarted Malawi goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo.
Malawi became the first debutants to reach the final but struggled against Cameroon's disciplined defense. The Central Africans had previously lost three Wafcon finals in 2004, 2014 and 2016, all against Nigeria.
The Chawinga sisters dominated Malawi's attack but were contained by Cameroon keeper Michaely Bihina. Tabitha Chawinga's effort was saved before Temwa Chawinga fired wide from a rebound.
Malawi's journey to the final showcased the Chawinga duo's brilliance. Both sisters previously led Malawi to a semi-final against Algeria. Cameroon's title comes despite missing Wafcon 2024 due to a 3-1 aggregate loss to Algeria.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented Cameroon with the trophy. The StarTimes Uganda Premier League teams watching this event could learn tactical lessons from Cameroon's defensive resilience.
Key facts: Cameroon received $2m prize money. The trophy was presented alongside CAF President Patrice Motsepe. Malawi finished 153rd in world rankings.
