Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho has retired from international football after 13 years with the national team, bringing an end to a career in which he earned 77 caps and featured in three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.
Aucho announced his retirement on Monday, October 12, thanking the coaches, teammates, football administrators and fans who supported him throughout his journey with the Cranes.
“Today, I officially announce my retirement from international football after an unforgettable 13-year journey representing my country, the Uganda Cranes,” Aucho said in a statement.
The midfielder made his international debut on November 30, 2013, and later rose to captain the national team. He described wearing Uganda’s black, yellow and red jersey as the greatest privilege of his life.
Aucho also recalled his humble beginnings at Bugembe Market, where his dream of representing Uganda started before he rose through the ranks to become one of the country’s established midfielders.
One of the highlights of his career was Uganda’s return to the AFCON finals after a 38-year absence. He also valued the opportunity to represent the country at three editions of the continental tournament and lead the Cranes as captain.
The former captain paid tribute to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), football administrators, coaches and teammates for the roles they played in his career.
He singled out former Uganda Cranes coach Fred Kajoba, who has since passed away, for his belief and guidance, which helped shape his journey in the national team.
Aucho also thanked the fans who supported the Cranes at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, and across the country, saying their backing helped the team overcome difficult moments.
Despite stepping away from international football, the midfielder said he would continue supporting Ugandan football and the next generation of players.
“It is now time for a new generation of heroes to step forward, carry the flag and write their own history. I look forward to supporting them as one of Uganda’s biggest fans,” he said.
Aucho has also enjoyed an extensive club career, playing in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Serbia, India, Egypt, Tanzania and Ethiopia. His clubs have included Gor Mahia, Baroka FC, Red Star Belgrade, East Bengal and Young Africans.
