Arsenal eye Julian Alvarez but summer move looks impossible

Arsenal have been linked with Julian Alvarez, but the Argentine’s firm wish to join Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s stubborn price tag keep the Gunners out of the race this summer.

Alvarez, 24, confirmed his appetite for a new challenge after Real Madrid’s £129 million bid was turned down. He did not name Barcelona outright, yet sources say La Liga giants are his top choice and he hopes the two clubs can sort a deal.

Atletico have already rebuffed an £86.4 million offer from Barcelona, shouting that the player is tied down on a long‑term contract and that they will not sell to a Spanish rival. Their mantra? If they must sell, they would rather take a non‑Spanish suitor.

That clause bites Arsenal hard. The Gunners made a push earlier in May, with talks reportedly held between Arsenal’s scouting chief and Barcelona director Deco at the Torre Melina hotel in Catalonia on 27 May. The meeting hinted at Arsenal’s willingness to slip a hefty sum into the negotiation, but the Catalan club’s refusal to negotiate with a direct rival left Gunners with a dead end.

Alvarez’s résumé reads like a Premier League dream: two league titles and a host of trophies with Manchester City. Yet the Argentine is not keen on a return to England. "He’s enjoyed his time in the Premier League, but the next chapter is set elsewhere," says a source close to the player. His focus is now firmly on a La Liga adventure, not a second stint in the north.

Paris Saint‑Germain have also floated the idea of stepping in, promising a big financial commitment should Alvarez signal interest in France. Still, the Argentine’s heart seems set on Barcelona, making a PSG move unlikely.

How realistic is an Arsenal‑Alvarez transfer this window?

Very slim. Atletico’s stance against selling to a Spanish club and Alvarez’s declared preference for Barcelona leave Arsenal with little leverage. Unless Atletico’s board changes its mind or a new clause is triggered, the north London side will have to look elsewhere.

What does this mean for Arsenal’s summer plans?

The Gunners must redirect their resources toward other forwards. With the summer window closing fast, Arsenal will likely chase a proven Premier League scorer or a rising talent from a less‑expensive league. Their scouting network will be busy, and Ugandan bettors will have fresh markets to watch.

Will Julian Alvarez ever join a Premier League club?

Possibly, but not this summer. Alvarez’s next move points toward Barcelona, and any English offer would have to beat both his personal wish and Atletico’s price.
